Does it feel like you’re drowning in self-care advice, yet none of it works for you?
The truth is, self-care isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. What works for someone else might leave you feeling more overwhelmed than refreshed.
So what’s the key to a sustainable self-care routine?
Tailoring it to your unique needs and preferences.
This is part of becoming “that woman” – a woman who doesn’t follow the latest self-care trends but builds habits that fit HER life and make her thrive.
In this week’s article and YouTube video, I’m sharing how I built self-care rituals that work for ME.
If you’re tired of following advice that leaves you drained, here are 4 tips on how to create a self-care routine that’s personalized, practical, and transformative!
1. Stop Following Cookie-Cutter Advice
How often have you been told to drink a specific green juice or try the latest wellness fad?
Celery juice, cold plunges, and spa days might work wonders for some people, but it doesn’t mean they will for you.
When we follow cookie-cutter self-care advice, we’re just copying others and doing what we believe we should do. We don’t consider if that self-care habit aligns with us and our lifestyle.
A classic example of this is waking up at 5 am.
After listening to many influencers and reading various self-care books, I thought that my life would magically become amazing if I started waking up earlier each day.
But what I should have taken into account was that I’m not a morning person. In fact, I’m most productive and creative in the afternoons and evenings.
So, guess what happened when I adopted the self-care habit of starting my day at 5 am?
I was exhausted and drained.
No matter how early I went to bed, I soon realized that waking up early doesn’t work for me, and that’s totally OK.
There are so many self-care rituals out there to choose from. So don’t follow cookie-cutter advice and do what others tell you. Instead, find what works for you, which brings me to tip number 2.
2. Define What Self-Care Means To You
Sustainable and effective self-care comes from understanding and choosing the activities that make you feel most restored, balanced, and energized.
So take some time to ponder this question – What makes you feel truly recharged?
Don’t worry about what anyone else is doing or trying to fit a specific mold.
If you find reading a book more rejuvenating than meditating, that’s totally fine.
For me, cooking a nourishing meal always leaves me feeling balanced and restored. It may not be the most apparent or trendy self-care ritual, but it works for me, so I do it.
I also prefer to carve out short but regular quiet moments during my day rather than follow a 2-hour morning self-care routine. This is because sitting down with a cup of tea and taking a few minutes to breathe after a busy day makes a huge difference to my mindset and energy.
So, seek out the activities that genuinely replenish your energy, and start incorporating them into your day. Who cares if it’s not aesthetic or Instagram-worthy?
3. Build A Self-Care Routine That Fits Your Life
Once you’ve chosen your self-care activities, the next step is to build a routine that fits your lifestyle and schedule.
I spread my self-care rituals throughout the day because my schedule does not allow for a comprehensive routine each morning. And honesty, that’s the reality for most people.
If you prefer to practice self-care in the morning, perhaps because that is when you feel most drained, choose a short and simple routine. Does your schedule allow 15 minutes to journal and take a short walk?

4. Avoid Common Self-Care Mistakes
As you start building your self-care routine, there are a few common traps I want to help you avoid—trust me, I’ve fallen into them myself, and I see them all the time.
First up? Overcomplicating it.
There are no rules when it comes to self-care. Your skincare regimen doesn’t have to have ten steps, and you don’t have to meditate for 30 minutes for it to “count” as self-care.
The longer and more complicated your self-care routine is, the harder it will be to stick at it. So, I recommend choosing just one or two self-care activities rather than trying to fit everything in.
The second pitfall? Turning self-care into another task on your to-do list.
Self-care should be something you look forward to, not something you force yourself to do. This is why choosing activities that bring you genuine joy, peace, or calm is crucial; that way, it won’t feel like a burden.
Final Thoughts
When you create a self-care routine that’s personalized, practical, and tailored to your life, the transformation is undeniable—I know this firsthand!
Everything changed when I stopped following everyone else’s advice and tuned in to what I needed. I felt more energized, balanced, and deeply connected to myself.
