5 Proven Strategies For Finding Your Purpose In Life

So many of us spend our lives chasing goals that don’t fulfill us. Although our lives may look impressive on paper, an unsettling feeling lingers—a quiet emptiness that’s hard to shake. 

Deep down, this feeling signals something crucial: our actions don’t align with our purpose.

Finding your purpose is about discovering what truly drives you, and in this article, I’ll show you how you can find yours.

Imagine jumping out of bed each morning, motivated by the knowledge that what you do matters—not just to you, but to the world around you. 

Here are five proven strategies to uncover what lights you up, so you can build a life that’s fulfilling, meaningful, and completely aligned with your authentic self. Because once you connect your purpose, your best life begins!

1. Reflect on Your Childhood Joys and Interests

As kids, we do things purely for the joy of it. We’re not yet shaped by what’s “practical” or what we “should” be doing—we’re simply following what lights us up. 

So, while it may sound cliché, rediscovering your passion starts with looking back at what you loved doing as a child.

What did you enjoy doing before anyone placed expectations on you? Did you spend hours drawing, building, exploring the outdoors, or putting on performances?

As a child, I would spend hours getting lost in stories, whether reading, writing, or creating them. 

When we grow up and become adults, we often lose touch with these early passions and even forget about them. But revisiting what you loved as a child can reconnect you with something deeply authentic—a part of you that might hold the key to your purpose!

2. Identify Your Flow States

“Flow” is a mental state where you become so immersed by what you’re doing that you lose awareness of time and your surroundings. 

What you’re doing feels natural and enjoyable when you’re in this flow state. You’re not forcing yourself or disciplining yourself to do it, nor are you struggling to stay focused or engaged.

Psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, who coined the term “flow,” describes it as being intensely focused, highly productive, deriving great joy and satisfaction from your actions.

With this in mind, take some time to think about the last time you were so deeply engrossed in something that the hours ‘flew by.’ What were you doing?

I experience this flow state when I’m deep in a creative project. That’s when I know I’m doing something aligned with my purpose.

The problem is that many people ignore these moments because they think they are not being productive or should be doing something ‘more important.’ 

But think about this: What is more important than connecting with your passion?

3. Explore the Intersection of Your Strengths and Fulfillment

Another common mistake people make is focusing solely on what they are good at and ignoring what makes them feel fulfilled.

But the truth is, it doesn’t have to be one or the other. It’s totally possible to blend your strengths with fulfillment, and that’s what strategy number 3 is all about.

So how do you find this sweet spot?

Start by listing all your strengths, the things you are naturally good at. Then go through that list, asking yourself, “Which of these makes me feel most fulfilled when I’m doing them?”

Remember, just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean it’s your passion.

4. Journal and Self-Reflect

Journaling is an excellent way to better understand yourself, including your purpose and passion. This is because writing down your thoughts allows you to bypass the noise in your head and get to the heart of what you really want.

When I was considering leaving my medical career, I spent a lot of time journaling. Here are the two journaling prompts that I found most helpful:

  • “If I didn’t have to worry about money, what would I spend my time doing?” 
  • “What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail?”

Fear of failure or judgment often prevents us from acknowledging and accepting what we truly desire. But the more openly you express yourself on the page, the closer you’ll come to discovering your purpose. 

I firmly believe that honest journaling peels away layers of doubt, revealing what truly matters to you.

5. Experiment with New Things

The truth is, you likely won’t find your passion if you don’t try new things. Experimenting is how we discover what we’re good at and what we truly enjoy doing. 

So challenge yourself to try something new this month, something you’ve always been curious about but perhaps a little anxious to try before. 

It could be signing up for a new class, volunteering for a cause, or even starting a side project.

When I began questioning my future in medicine, I deeply felt the weight of that decision. So, I took small steps to test the waters—saying yes to new projects, diving into side opportunities, and following my curiosity. 

Sure, some paths didn’t feel right, but others led to possibilities I had never imagined.

So, push yourself to break through that fear of the unknown and start exploring the possibilities out there. You’ll be surprised how much you learn about yourself and where your true passions lie!
