We’ve all met them… those people who just radiate something.

They walk into a room and everyone turns toward them. They don’t hustle for attention or try to impress, yet people are drawn in.

What makes them so magnetic?

It’s not luck, and it’s not some elusive “it factor.” It’s actually a handful of small, subtle habits that completely shift the energy you bring into every interaction.

And the best part? Anyone can learn them, including me, who was once the shyest girl in school.

Once I adopted these five habits, I stopped blending into the background and became someone who genuinely enjoys connecting with strangers and confidently walks into large events.

Here’s how I did it and how you can, too…

1. The 2-Second Eye Contact Rule

Let’s start with the power of eye contact. When we feel shy, we tend to avoid looking people in the eye. However, this just demonstrates our lack of confidence.

Magnetic people always use eye contact, but not in a dominating or intimidating way. They use it as a way to connect, show the other person they are present, and open up the opportunity to build a bond.

Research shows that people who hold eye contact about 60–70% of the time are perceived as more confident, trustworthy, and likable.

But how do you know how much eye contact to use to create this perception? And how can you avoid making the other person feel uncomfortable instead?

It’s all to do with the 2-second rule.

When you’re talking to someone, hold their gaze just two seconds longer than feels natural.

I once tried this while ordering coffee. I held eye contact with the barista for just a beat longer than usual, and her whole energy shifted. She smiled wider, stood taller, and honestly, so did I.

2. The Open Posture Reset

Before you even say a word, your body has already introduced you.

For years, I walked into rooms with rounded shoulders and crossed arms, basically screaming, “Don’t approach me, don’t even notice me.”

And guess what? People responded exactly that way.

The thing is, I craved connection and conversation. I just lacked the confidence and

self-assurance to carry myself in a way that would deliver it.

The fix? The open posture reset.

You may have heard of the Harvard “power pose” study by Amy Cuddy. The research boils down to this: posture influences how others perceive you and how you perceive yourself.

When you uncross your arms, relax your shoulders, and angle your torso toward the person you’re speaking with, you send a message that says “I belong here.” And so, people start to treat you as though you do.

This one-second reset could be the difference between shrinking into the corner and standing out.

3. The Name Echo

Magnetic people have a knack for making others feel seen, and using someone’s name is one of the key ways they do so.

Neuroscience supports this idea.

Hearing your own name activates pleasure centers in the brain. It’s like a microdose of dopamine; when people call you by your name, you feel recognized.

Try it for yourself the next time you meet someone new. Use their name three times — once when you greet them, once naturally during the conversation, and once as you say goodbye.

When I first started practicing this at events, I was shocked at the difference. People opened up more, smiled more, and remembered me afterward. Some of those “tiny moments” have turned into real friendships and professional collaborations.

4. The Micro-Pause

I used to feel so nervous at parties and events that I would fill every silence with awkward chatter, speaking fast but not actually saying anything meaningful.

I was aware of doing this, but I didn’t know how to stop it. I thought if I stayed silent, it would be even more awkward.

But then, during my medical residency, I learnt the micro-pause.

My professor would ask me to explain what I saw in an X-ray in front of the entire class. I was tempted just to blurt something out immediately, thinking that would make me look more competent.

But instead, I decided to pause, examine the x-ray, think about it, and then speak.

My professor pulled me aside after and mentioned how calm and confident I seemed during the assignment.

Inside, I felt anything but, and that’s when I learned how powerful pausing before speaking truly is.

And that’s why magnetic people don’t rush. They let their words land.

Take Steve Jobs, for instance. During his Apple keynotes, he makes a statement, then pauses, letting the silence draw people in. That’s presence.

5. The Curiosity Spark

This last one might be the most powerful of all.

Magnetic people don’t focus on being interesting; they focus on being interested.

Harvard research found that people who ask thoughtful follow-up questions are rated as more likable and competent.

Why?

Because curiosity shows genuine care.

Try this the next time you find yourself making small talk:

  • After asking someone, “How’s work?” ask, “What’s been the most exciting part of your work lately?”
  • Or, after asking “Where are you from?” follow it up with “What do you love most about living there?”

These little follow-up questions instantly deepen conversations, turning awkward (and sometimes painful) small talk into real talk… and people remember that feeling.

The Bottom Line

Magnetic people make others feel seen, heard, and safe to be themselves. By adopting these five habits, you can achieve the same results.

If I could go from the quiet kid who never raised her hand to someone who thrives in rooms full of strangers, you can too.
