Are you feeling stuck in life?
Do you have hopes, goals, and dreams, but whatever you do, you never seem to move closer toward them?
If life seems to have come to a standstill, this is a sign that you need to examine your habits.
Why?
Many negative yet subtle habits can silently hold us back from our desired life.
These habits can be incredibly sneaky. They creep up on us and take hold without us knowing they are there.
However, knowledge is power. So once we identify a bad habit, we take control of the steering wheel and can choose to change it.
To help you do that, I’m shedding light on the six most common habits that keep us stuck in life. Take a look at this week’s YouTube video here:
As you go through this list, honestly assess yourself, asking “Is this something I do?”
1. Negative Self-Talk
This first habit is incredibly detrimental because it shapes your perception of yourself and your capabilities.
We all experience negative self-talk from time to time. But if you don’t know how to shut down this ‘inner critic,’ it will become louder and louder.
Those nasty thoughts then start running in a loop in your head, and it feels like you can’t escape them.
The result?
A self-fulfilling prophecy.
You start to believe this voice, thinking, “If my head is telling me I’m incapable of achieving my goals, it must be true.”
This lowers your confidence and zaps your motivation, preventing you from taking risks or opportunities.
2. Lack of Prioritization
This is one you most likely don’t realize you’re doing.
If you are not clear on priorities, you will try to do everything, which will lead to overwhelm, confusion, and procrastination.
Can you relate? Does everything always seem urgent and important, and you’re unsure what to do first?
Lack of prioritization causes a cycle of unproductive busyness. You feel like you’re always doing something but never making meaningful progress towards your goals.
In other words, you feel like a hamster on a wheel, constantly moving but never going anywhere.
This can be incredibly demotivating and frustrating. But the most significant consequence is this: when you focus on unimportant tasks or distractions, you easily miss out on meaningful opportunities.
3. Mindless Consumption
How much time do you spend scrolling on social media and the internet daily?
Keep that number in mind and check your screen time on your phone’s settings.
I bet you spend a lot more time consuming content than you realize.
While scrolling Instagram may relieve boredom, it kills productivity.
Mindless consumption wastes large chunks of time that could be used for something more meaningful, like self-care, working on your passion project, or studying.
Research also shows that mindless consumption can:
- Lower creativity
- Increase anxiety, depression, and stress
- Mess up your sleep patterns
In other words, it can make you feel constantly tired and in a low mood, preventing you from taking positive action to move closer to your goals.
4. Overcommitment
Do you struggle to say no and turn down someone’s request for help?
There is a big difference between being helpful and being a people pleaser.
Because people pleasers struggle to say no to things, they overcommit.
Juggling too much is stressful and overwhelming but can also hold you back from your goals.
Here’s how…
When you take on too many tasks and obligations, it can be difficult to focus on your most important priorities, such as pursuing your goals.
So, like the habit of not prioritizing, we get trapped in a cycle of busyness without ever seeing meaningful progress.
5. Fear of Failure
Fear of failing is one of the most common reasons we keep ourselves small.
When we fear failure, whenever a new opportunity arises, our mind goes straight to the thought, “What if I fail?”
We then start envisioning all the negative consequences that could occur from failing, creating the emotion of fear.
This fear then holds us back as we feel it is safer to stay where we are, in our comfort zone. So, we avoid taking risks or pursuing new opportunities.
This is the problem with the comfort zone. It may feel safe and comforting, but nothing ever grows there.
6. Self Sabotage
Fear of failure is one of the many ways we unconsciously self-sabotage.
Sometimes, we hold ourselves back because we fear success rather than failure.
This is when you worry about what might happen if you achieve your goal. Your life will change drastically, and you fear that it could bring you new problems.
For example, you might want to increase your income, but you worry about how people will respond if you do.
You worry your friends might become jealous of you, straining your relationships, or your family will expect you to share your money.
Another typical self-sabotaging behavior is imposter syndrome. For example, you’ve just graduated and gotten your first job in your specialized field, but you feel like a fraud, believing you’re not ready or not good enough.
Imposter syndrome makes you doubt your abilities despite the evidence of your accomplishments and credentials.
