Recently, I did a Facebook Livestream inside my private group on the topic of money mindset for health coaches and wellness entrepreneurs. I wanted to talk about WHY we, in health and wellness, have such trouble with money.
So let me ask you: what kind of relationship do you have with money? Is it healthy? Is it a happy relationship? Or do you have all kinds of old stories and money blocks standing in your way?
Truth is, in the wellness industry, we can be very, very blocked over money. Here are some common stories that health and wellness coaches tell themselves:
- “It’s not right for me to charge for this.”
- “I’m taking advantage of people’s illness to make money.”
- “Good health should be free.”
- “I can’t really make offers because I don’t want to be salesy.”
But here’s what I want to say about that: these are just stories we’re telling ourselves. They are patterns we’ve learned over the years, often from childhood, or from society at large, and they are unhelpful patterns.
Why We Fall Prey To Money Mindset Traps
Women are particularly vulnerable to this stuff, take this on board more readily, and a lot of it comes from the concept of the “good girl” the “helpful girl” who gives, selflessly, without taking anything for herself.
And I personally want to take a more empowered stance for women. I’m talking about women, in particular, because in wellness it really often is women, and we really do struggle with this issue — me included!
Trust me, I have fallen prey to those mindset traps myself and I have had to do a lot of work to unpack all that stuff. All that money blocking, negative money mindset, I had to confront it all.
And now I see it in the health coaches in my community…so many of these similar money mindset traps.
Do those Money Mindset Issues Sound Familiar?
So does any of this sound familiar to you? I bet it does. All these old stories of feeling guilty for charging for your services, feeling like you’re taking advantage of people’s illnesses, not wanting to be salesy…
But you are not alone. So many health coaches struggle with this, and it really sabotages your own success.
After all, how can you build a business if you’re reluctant to actually charge and make money?
How To Move Past Money Mindset Blocks
If this is something you struggle with, I’ve got some specific thoughts for you on this, on how to move past this particular thought pattern that may be holding you back.
One of the mentors I look to, Denise Duffield-Thomas, she offers up this mantra for health and wellness entrepreneurs who are struggling with money blocks: “I serve, I deserve.” This simple mantra functions like a pattern interrupt. An affirmation that reframes your negative thinking about receiving money.
And the truth is, it doesn’t serve anyone for you to go broke trying to run a charitable health coaching service. It just doesn’t.
This kind of real talk may be hard to hear. But the truth is, you will be providing a ton of value for people on multiple levels. Your free content will, of course, be available for everyone and anyone. But your paid services need to be just that– they need to be paid. And they need to be appropriately paid. You need to charge your worth, so you can serve your community without burning out completely– because if you do that, you won’t be able to help anybody.
Why It’s Important To Have A Healthy Money Mindset
Of course good health should be free … I mean, that’s the ideal world, but the reality is that some people need more help than others — and there are lots of reasons for that.
Yes, people could probably find this information for free elsewhere but some people want more than just information. Some people want that deeper level transformation and they want personalized support and attention to get there. That’s why they’re coming to you.
So not giving them that option, not offering that service or program means you’re not actually serving them to the best of your ability.
In fact, your negative thoughts about charging for your services are actually stopping you from doing the work you’re meant to do.
So I’m here to tell you: it’s OKAY to charge for your services in the health & wellness field. In fact, it’s more than okay. You have a responsibility to do it.
Whenever you feel yourself starting to spiral into that guilt or shame or self doubt about charging, keep that mantra in mind “I serve, I deserve”.
For those of you who have these creeping concerns that there’s just something a little wrong about charging for wellness services, it’s a little seedy, vaguely unethical…I want to tell you that this is just a money block. And it’s a common one.
I’m curious: what did these ideas bring up for you? Any particular thoughts or feelings triggered by this topic? I’d love to know.
**quick announcement: last week I opened enrollment to my group coaching program that will start on November 1st, called The Prosperous Health Coach Mastermind. It’s a 90-day program, and the goal is to step-by-step build a rock-solid foundation for your health coaching business, including choosing your niche, creating your signature programs, designing your brand…all those pieces you may *know* you need to work on and finalize but are struggling to get it done! In this program we’ll be going through and doing it together.
At the end you’ll have your entire business foundation completed and you’ll be starting to implement my system for generating consistent income as a health coach. One of the first pieces we tackle in the program is money mindset (the stuff I was talking about here), so if you resonate with that topic, I encourage you to check out this group program.
