How To Become A Health Coach – The Step-By-Step Method I Teach My Clients

Building a career as a health or wellness coach from scratch can be overwhelming. 

With so much to do to get things off the ground, you may need help figuring out where to start or what to focus on first.

If you’ve been struggling with this, I’m here to help. In this week’s article and YouTube video, I’m breaking down the process of building a wellness coaching business.

By following these 8 steps, you’ll feel more confident than confused in no time.


1. Self-Reflection

Before you take action on building your coaching business, spend some time understanding your WHY.

Your WHY is your reason for doing this. What makes you want to become a health coach?

Journal on your passions, goals, and what you want to achieve with this career. 

For example, your goal could be:

  • To create a life with more freedom where you can choose when and how much to work
  • To create a passive source of income
  • To expand your reach to help many more people.

Understanding the driving force behind your business is crucial. 

It will allow you to get started with more clarity and help you stay focused and motivated throughout the journey, especially when challenges arise.

2. Education

Once you’re clear on your WHY, it’s time to gain the skills and knowledge you need to run a thriving coaching business.

It’s likely you already have a lot of knowledge in the health and wellness field. However, you may not yet possess the coaching skills to guide and support people through a transformative personal journey. 

Moreover, unless you have a business background, you will likely need to learn some business skills, such as marketing, and how to craft a successful offer.

Enrolling in an online health or wellness coaching program is the best way to brush up on the knowledge needed AND feel more confident.

I run a wellness coach training program, but many others are out there. So take some time to research them and choose the one that’s the best fit for YOU. 

Also, consider gaining a certification. While certifications aren’t mandatory in this field, they can significantly enhance your credibility AND confidence.

3. Cultivate Strong Coaching Skills

Cultivating strong coaching skills goes beyond education. The best way to improve as a coach is to PRACTICE.

But how can you do so if you haven’t yet launched your business?

This is something I recommend looking for in a wellness coaching program. 

For example, in WCA, we run small-group Coaching Incubators. This allows you to gain REAL coaching practice in a low-stress setting. 

We hear time and time again from our students how helpful this is for gaining confidence.

4. Define Your Niche

There is no question about whether you should be a generalist or a specialist. 

Specializing in a specific niche propels your success in many ways:

  • It helps you tailor your services to meet the unique needs of a particular target audience
  • It allows you to attract the clients you want to work with the most
  • It helps you stand out in a competitive market 
  • It makes marketing easier
  • It increases credibility and expertise, which means you can charge more

What’s more, as health and wellness is such a broad field, almost an endless number of niches are available.

For example, let’s say you feel passionate about stress management. There are so many offers around stress management that you could focus on, such as:

  • Helping stressed-out entrepreneurs achieve a calm and nourishing lifestyle
  • Helping stressed and busy moms prioritize self-care
  • Helping healthcare professionals like doctors and paramedics recover from burnout

5. Build An Online Presence

As mentioned, the health and wellness coaching space is VERY competitive. So, to stand out, you’ve got to get yourself out there.

Social media is a fab way to do that, whether via Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or another platform. By sharing valuable content and engaging with your audience, you can establish yourself as an authority in your niche.

Another way to build an online presence is to develop a professional website. This serves as a place to highlight your qualifications, advertise your services, and showcase your client testimonials. 

6. Network and Collaborate

Along with engaging with your target audience, you should seek to connect with other professionals in related fields (such as nutritionists, fitness trainers, or mental health experts).

Why?

Networking helps broaden your knowledge, create referral opportunities, and foster collaborations that expand your offering.

Networking is also a way to build confidence. When you connect with like-minded business owners, you build a support network, making you feel less alone in what can sometimes feel like a lonely profession.

And remember, while you can attend many in-person networking events, social media platforms like LinkedIn offer endless opportunities to connect with others.

7. Develop A Signature Coaching Program

Of course, crafting your signature offer is one of the most significant steps.

Your offer should be tailored specifically to the needs and wants of your target audience and designed to solve their biggest problem or concern.

While coaching programs are often pre-recorded online courses, this is just one option. Your offer could also be a live group, or a private 1:1 course.

To craft your offer, detail the framework of your method that will help your ideal client get from point A to point B.

If you need further guidance, I offer done-for-you programs for different niches and issues. These act as training wheels at the beginning of your business launch to help you get up and running fast.

8. Market Your Health Coaching Services

Finally, once you’ve crafted your offer, you’ll need to get it out there. So that’s where marketing comes in.

Now, there are many different types of marketing strategies you can use to gain clients, such as:

  • Content Marketing – Creating blog posts, videos, or articles on topics that resonate with your target audience. 
  • Social Media Marketing – Boosting your visibility online by sharing success stories, hosting live Q&A sessions, etc.
  • Email marketing – Nurturing relationships with potential clients by sharing regular newsletters, exclusive content, and special offers.
  • Collaborations – Partnering with other health professionals to expand your reach to new audiences.
