Are you tired of feeling sluggish, lethargic, or bloated and want to give your body a reset?
If so, you’ve probably been pondering the idea of detoxing.
Perhaps you’ve researched detoxing but were left feeling overwhelmed or put off by the strict restrictions that come with juice fasts and cleanses.
Well, I’m here to tell you that there is a gentler, easier way to detox your body.
To help you take action TODAY, I’ve put together a simple 7-step detox protocol, ideal for first-time detoxes.
But before we dive into the protocol, let’s discuss how a detox could help you…
Is Detoxing Necessary?
Firstly, it’s important to mention that our bodies are designed with several mechanisms for detoxification.
Our liver, kidneys, lungs, and GI tract all eliminate waste products and toxins from our bodies without any intervention.
Now, this in-built detoxification system may have been enough for our ancestors.
However…
With processed foods, environmental toxins, and stressors now inundating us, our bodies could use a helping hand.
Here are six reasons why detoxing is something we all should consider:
- Increased Exposure to Environmental Toxins – Nowadays, we are exposed to toxins from multiple sources. From air pollution to water contamination to pesticides, these toxins can overwhelm our body’s natural detoxification processes.
- Poor Dietary Choices – Supermarkets are now full of processed foods. These foods are high in sugar and unhealthy fats and contain artificial additives and preservatives. They provide little nutritional value and burden the body’s detoxification organs.
- Stress – Life is becoming increasingly stressful, so many of us have elevated stress hormone levels. These hormones, such as cortisol, can disrupt the body’s natural detoxification processes and lead to inflammation and oxidative stress.
- Sedentary Lifestyle – Our bodies were not designed to sit and stare at a screen for eight hours a day. Doing so negatively affects our circulation and slows down our lymph system, which impacts the natural detox pathways.
- Overuse of Medications and Drugs – Excessive and prolonged use of medications, recreational drugs, and alcohol places additional stress on the liver and kidneys, the body’s two most significant detox organs.
- Cumulative Toxic Burden – All of the above factors can lead to a high accumulation of toxins in the body. This causes a significant burden on our organs and leads to chronic health problems, like autoimmune diseases, hormonal imbalances, metabolic disorders, and cancer.
A Simple Approach To Detoxing
If you’re new to detoxing or you just aren’t keen on drinking only juices for a week, I’ve put together a simpler and gentler detox method.
Step One: Hydrate!
Ample water intake keeps your body hydrated and flushed out toxins. So start each day with a large glass of water (before eating or drinking anything else).
Then, aim to drink 8-10 glasses of water (2 liters) each day. I find large water bottles with markers super helpful for tracking my daily water intake.
Step Two: Eat Clean
During your detox period, aim to eat clean as much as possible. This means focusing on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, nuts, and seeds.
Avoid all processed foods and consume only natural sugars from fruits. I also recommend minimizing caffeine and avoiding alcohol during your detox period.
Step Three: Eat Mindfully
Many people overlook this step, yet eating mindfully can have a huge impact on digestion and nutrient absorption.
Mindful eating helps you eat slower and savor the flavor of your meals more. It also helps you better hear your body’s hunger and fullness cues, which can help prevent overeating.
Step Four: Sip Herbal Teas
Did you know that herbal teas support liver function and digestion, which aids detoxification? Make the most of their benefits by drinking 2-3 cups of dandelion root tea, green tea, or ginger tea throughout the day.
Step Five: Get Moving
As mentioned, a sedentary lifestyle can hinder your body’s detoxification processes. By engaging in some form of exercise every day, you’ll help improve circulation, stimulate lymphatic drainage, and increase sweating.
Step Six: Prioritize Rest
Sleep deprivation disrupts your body’s natural processes and increases oxidative stress and inflammation. So, during your detox period, prioritize rest and relaxation.
Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night, and incorporate relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation into your daily routine.
Step Seven: Incorporate Detox Support Supplements Or Practices
You can use many other gentle forms of detox support to boost your body’s detoxifying capabilities. These include:
- Probiotics
- Fiber supplements
- Dry brushing
- Epsom salt baths
Self-care practices like these are simple ways to support your body’s detoxification processes beyond your detox period.
