Some years slip by without leaving a mark. They are so unmemorable that you can’t think of one significant thing that happened.

Others… change everything. These are the years that transform the trajectory of your life.

If you want 2026 to be the year you look back on and say, “That’s when my life truly shifted,” it starts with three simple daily moves.

They aren’t just nice habits; they’re actions that, when done daily, reshape who you are at your core.

So let’s get straight into the three steps that can make your next chapter your most impactful yet.

The 10-Second Identity Rehearsal

The first daily move starts the moment you wake up. First thing in the morning, before you pick up your phone and flood your brain with chaos, take ten seconds to mentally REHEARSE who you’re becoming.

I call this the 10-Second Identity Rehearsal, and here’s why this matters…

Your brain can’t fully tell the difference between what you imagine and what you actually do.

When you see, feel, and embody a future version of yourself, your brain fires the same neural pathways as if you’re already living that version.

Elite athletes use mental rehearsal all the time, and science backs it up.

In a Cleveland Clinic study, participants spent 12 weeks mentally rehearsing arm and finger exercises; not actually performing the exercises, simply visualizing them. By the end of the 12 weeks, participants had increased their arm strength by 13% and hand strength by 35%!

Imagine what happens when you use that same power on your confidence, your habits, your life.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. As soon as you wake up, sit up and close your eyes.
  2. Ask yourself: “Who am I becoming?”
  3. Picture that future version of you doing one small, ordinary action with ease. It could be finishing that book, speaking confidently in a meeting, or walking into the gym like you belong.
  4. Feel this vision in your body as vividly as you can for 10 seconds. Notice how your posture, your breath, and your energy are.

2. The One Aligned Action Rule

When I left medicine and began the long journey of reinventing my career, I was completely overwhelmed.

I didn’t have a roadmap, just this deep knowing that I couldn’t keep living the same story.

The uncertainty was paralysing, but I knew I had to start moving forward. So I made myself a rule:

Every day, do one action that future-me would be proud of.

Some days, it was a huge, scary action, like enrolling in a high-level coaching program, batch filming a bunch of YouTube videos, or inviting clients to work with me.

Other days, it was something smaller but still meaningful, like going for a walk instead of spending the day on the couch feeling sorry for myself.

Yet every single day, I took one action, and that’s what built the momentum I needed to reinvent my career and identity.

So this is step 2: Take one aligned action every day:

  1. In the morning, after your 10-second rehearsal, ask yourself, “What’s one thing my future self would thank me for today?”
  2. Write it down. Make it specific and achievable, like “Record one video” or “Say no to one thing that drains me.”
  3. Do that one thing. Even if it’s uncomfortable — that discomfort is a sign your old identity is stretching to make room for the new one.

Why does this work?

Identity grows through evidence. Every small act becomes a data point your brain uses to update its model of who you are.

Research calls this the self-perception effect: we don’t just act based on who we think we are; we also define who we are by how we act.

So when you show up for your future self by taking one aligned action, your brain updates its model of you.

It literally rewrites your self-concept in real time.

3. The Evening Rewrite

I call this one The Evening Rewrite.

It’s your chance to teach your brain to notice who you were becoming that day, instead of obsessing over what you think you failed to do.

Your brain has a negativity bias. It’s like Velcro for what went wrong, and Teflon for what went right. That’s why you can do nine things well, but lie awake replaying the one awkward conversation from 2 p.m.

So if you don’t intentionally record the moments when you show up as your future self, your brain will delete the evidence.

And if your brain keeps deleting the evidence, you’ll never feel like you’re growing, even when you are.

This goes back to the self-perception theory. We don’t just act based on who we think we are; we infer who we are based on what we observe ourselves doing.

You’re feeding your brain proof every time you write down evidence, like:

  • “I spoke calmly even when I was frustrated.”
  • “I went for a walk instead of scrolling.”
  • “I showed up on time for myself.”

Here’s how to put this final move into practice:

  1. Every night before bed, open a notebook or Notes app.
  2. Write three sentences that begin with “Today I was the kind of person who…”
  3. For example, “Today I was the kind of person who kept my promise to myself,” “Today I was the kind of person who moved my body even when I didn’t feel like it,” and “Today I was the kind of person who listened instead of rushing to fix.”
  4. Read your sentences out loud as your brain encodes information more deeply when it hears your own voice.
