Do you feel like you’re hustling hard and working all the hours, yet you somehow remain in the same spot?
You’re probably wondering, “What am I doing wrong?”
A few years back, I was in that same cycle—constantly pushing myself, convinced that working harder was the key to leveling up. But all it did was leave me mentally and physically drained.
That’s when I decided to take a step back and study the habits of successful people.
I learned that success isn’t about working harder, and it’s not even just about working smarter. Instead, it’s about how we structure our days, decisions, and thinking.
Successful people have a completely different approach to life from the rest of us. They possess habits that are intentional, unconventional, and incredibly effective.
Learning about these habits completely shifted my trajectory, and in this week’s article and YouTube video, I’m sharing five of them with you.
If you’re ready to break the cycle and start seeing real progress, these habits might be the key you’ve been missing. Let’s start with the first one…
1. Micro-Decisions
Do you find yourself feeling exhausted when you have a lot of decisions to make?
This is known as decision fatigue, the mental exhaustion that occurs from making multiple decisions over a short period.
Every choice we make throughout the day, no matter how small, depletes our cognitive resources, leaving us more prone to poor judgment and impulsive actions as the day goes on.
To counteract this, I suggest adopting the habit of micro-decisions.
It’s about reducing the number of trivial decisions you must make, like what to eat or wear, to conserve your mental energy for more important tasks.
Learning about this habit helped me realize how many small and unimportant decisions I would make each morning before my day started. I’d spend ages deciding what to wear, what task to do first, what to eat, and how to organize my day.
So, I adopted the habit of micro-decisions. I created a “uniform” for my workdays and started scheduling my day the night before instead.
It sounds small, but reducing the amount of decisions you have to make frees up your brainpower for the stuff that really matters.
2. Scheduled Daydreaming
Scheduled daydreaming, or intentional daydreaming, is one unusual but highly effective habit that many high achievers swear by.
Some of the world’s most brilliant minds, like Albert Einstein, are known for getting their best ideas when resting rather than working.
How?
Allowing our minds to wander can boost our creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
Next time you’re working on a project and hitting mental roadblocks, step away and take a walk or do a hobby you enjoy. Allow your mind to switch off from the project and let your thoughts drift. You might just find that the breakthrough you need suddenly appears.
3. Consistent Learning Outside Your Expertise
Truly successful people don’t just stick to mastering what they already excel at—they actively seek knowledge beyond their primary expertise. This habit broadens their perspective and often leads to unexpected opportunities and insights.
Take Elon Musk, for example. He makes a point of studying fields outside his industries, which allows him to view challenges through a fresh lens.
For me, this shift was transformative.
I used to be laser-focused on sharpening my skills in one area, but when I started branching out—learning about subjects like psychology and marketing—it completely changed how I approached my work.
Suddenly, I made connections I’d never seen before, and my problem-solving ability became more dynamic and creative.
So don’t confine yourself to what you know—explore new disciplines, and you’ll find it has a ripple effect on every aspect of your life and work.
4. Outsourcing Energy-Draining Tasks
If you have the habit of trying to do it all, listen up!
When I first started my business, I would juggle everything, trying to maintain control of all aspects of my business. But what I found was that when you try to do it all, you don’t do anything well.
By studying successful people, I observed that they don’t try to do everything. Instead, they focus on what they do best and delegate everything else.
It was challenging for me to do this initially. But it was a game changer once I overcame my need for control.
By delegating the tasks that don’t serve my highest potential, I gained so much more time and energy to focus on the parts of my business that truly moved the needle.
Try it for yourself in your business or home life. You don’t have to hire someone; you can also use automation tools to bring more energy and focus to what really matters.
5. Prioritizing Rest & Recovery
In a world that idolizes constant hustle, you might be surprised to learn that highly successful people prioritize rest.
To them, rest is not just a luxury; it’s a necessity and more than that, it is the key to unlocking their best performance.
Countless successful leaders like Arianna Huffington highlight the importance of sleep and rest in their journey to the top.
This is because when well-rested, we are more effective during our working hours. On the other hand, if we try to power through when we’re exhausted, we’ll not only be less effective and productive, but we will eventually burn out.
So prioritize rest. Ensure you are getting quality sleep each night, take plenty of breaks during the day, or carve out moments to do things that rejuvenate you.
