When I sat down to write my new book “Redesigning You,” I thought I was writing a book about health.

And in many ways, I was.

I wrote about habits, self-care, behavior change, and the practical steps that help us become healthier versions of ourselves. But the more I researched and reflected on my own journey, the more I realized I wasn’t really writing about health at all.

I was writing about reinvention.

Because beneath the habits we struggle to maintain, the goals we abandon, and the cycles of starting and stopping, there’s often something much deeper going on.

Here are some of the lessons writing this book taught me about reinvention. The things that surprised me, challenged me, and helped me understand why we can want to change so badly yet still stay the same.

1. Reinvention usually begins as friction

So many of us are waiting for reinvention to announce itself as inspiration or a sudden sense of clarity.

But in my experience, reinvention starts as friction; when the life you’ve worked so hard to build begins to feel like it was designed for a previous version of you.

From the outside, everything may look perfectly fine. You even have many of the things you once wanted. But internally, something feels off.

So when you notice this friction, you don’t feel inspired, hopeful, and motivated to make a huge life change. You feel annoyed with yourself.

  • Who am I to want something different?
  • Why can’t I just be grateful?
  • Other people would love to have this life.

This is where many people get stuck. They mistake gratitude for a reason to stay the same.

But gratitude does not automatically mean alignment. You can be deeply grateful for a chapter of your life and still recognize that you’ve outgrown it.

The research on regret is worth noting here. Because, yes, in the short term, people regret actions. But over the long term, people regret their inactions more, such as the things they never tried and the risks they never took.

So one of the most powerful shifts you can make is to stop asking “What is wrong with me for wanting something different?”

And start asking, “What is this friction trying to show me?”

2. You are not stuck because you lack information

When it comes to health, most people know the basics.

When patients came into my office, they typically knew what they wanted to change, what would help their problem, and even what had worked in the past.

So why would they still struggle to make those changes stick?

Information alone does not automatically become transformation.

You can know exactly what to do and still not do it. You can have the perfect plan and still keep avoiding

This is not just related to health, but reinvention in general.

You may know you want to start a business, leave the job, or write a book, yet remain stuck at square one.

The problem is not a lack of desire, or intelligence, or strategy. The problem is that the new behavior threatens the old identity.

This is the core of what Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey call immunity to change — the idea that people can genuinely want to change while simultaneously holding unconscious commitments that keep us tied to the status quo.

Part of you wants that new life. Another part of you wants the safety, familiarity, and certainty of the old one.

So begin questioning the story you hold about who you are.

Instead of asking, “What should I do?” ask, “Who do I have to become for this to feel natural?”

3. Self-image decides what feels realistic

Most of us like to think we make decisions based on logic. But very often, underneath the pros and cons and practical explanations, we are thinking: What feels possible for someone like me?

Your dream may feel exciting and even look good on paper, but if it doesn’t match your current self-image, some part of you will just file it under “not realistic.”

This often plays out in the phrase “not that kind of person”:

When I was working in medicine, patients would constantly say, “I’m just not an exercise person,” or “I’ve never been good with food,” as though these were neutral facts like eye color or height.

The problem with “not that kind of person” thinking is that once you accept that identity, every new behavior has to fight against it, even when the behavior looks small externally.

The mistake we then make is waiting. We think we need to feel like that kind of person until we can act.

But that confidence, clarity, or certainty we’re waiting for comes after action.

Our self-image updates through evidence

Every time we take a small uncomfortable action (and survive it), our mind starts to register that what once felt impossible could actually be plausible. And with each new piece of evidence, our old story starts to lose its authority.

4. Reinvention is identity rehearsal

Changing your identity is supposed to feel hard. The new behavior or habit is moving you in one direction while your old identity is pulling you in another.

This is where motivation and willpower often get too much credit. They might help you get started, but they rarely carry you all the way through the identity shift.

What does?

Identity rehearsal.

Every time you take an action that aligns with the person you’re becoming, you’re giving your brain a small experience of: This is something I do now. This is how I treat myself now. This is what I no longer negotiate.

Slowly, through repetition, each piece of evidence updates your identity, which is why small actions are so underestimated.

So, if you want to become healthier, ask yourself, “How would someone who takes their body seriously begin today?”

And then do that.

Exercise for 10 minutes, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or park a block away from the office. They might not seem like much from the outside, but internally, those small actions are enormous as they let you practice becoming the new you before you’ve fully updated your identity.

And evidence compounds.

One action then becomes two. Two actions become a pattern. A pattern becomes a reason to trust yourself. And self-trust slowly reshapes your identity.

5. Reinvention starts from within

What I kept coming back to as I wrote my new book is this…

The deepest reinvention is not just changing what your life looks like from the outside. It is changing the way you relate to yourself on the inside.

In my latest YouTube video, I dive deeper into these 4 lessons and share two more key revelations I had from this experience.

After you watch, I invite you to reflect on the following prompt (and, if you like, share your answer below):

“I’m becoming someone who…”
