Magnetism isn’t reserved for the young, the good-looking, or the most confident. It’s all about the energy you exude.
And here’s the thing… We all possess magnetic energy; we just need to learn how to tap into it.
Regardless of how old you are, if you understand the principles behind magnetism, you CAN become that person who lights up every room they walk into. And no, you don’t need to change your personality or pretend to be someone else.
Here are 5 energetic principles that will help you become magnetic in your own unique way.
1. Stop Seeking Approval
It’s easy to spot when someone is seeking approval:
- The slight over-smiling
- Laughing just a little too quickly
- Giving one too many compliments
Our brains are wired to detect instability. That’s why when someone is genuine and authentic, we feel relaxed around them.
And it’s why when someone is putting on an act to gain our approval, we feel uncomfortable and want to create distance from them.
The problem is we can adopt this behaviour without realising; it’s human nature to want others to like us, after all.
When I first started speaking publicly, I would overexplain and nod my head too much, giving off a subtle and unconscious “please like me” vibe.
So how did I release this habit?
The shift happened when I decided I wasn’t there to be liked. I was there to deliver value.
And as soon as I started focusing on delivering value, I started giving off VERY different energy.
So this is the first step to becoming magnetic: Stop asking the room for permission. You already belong.
2. Slow Down Your Energy
If you watch people who carry real presence, you rarely see them rush.
They pause before answering, speak slowly, and invite in silence. This creates a kind of energy that feels deliberate, measured, and authoritative.
Research shows that people who speak with a slower cadence and controlled variation are consistently rated as more powerful and more credible.
On the other hand, those who speak fast and fill every gap with unnecessary words or nervous laughter come across as unconfident and insecure.
Interestingly, young people often compensate with speed. They rush their sentences to prove they’re smart and deserve to be there.
Meanwhile, older people are more likely to use fewer words, longer pauses, and more stillness.
So tip number two is to adopt a slower, more mature energy when communicating. Because deliberate and slow feels grounded, and grounded feels magnetic.
3. Regulate Your Nervous System
Magnetism is not about having intense energy, it’s about having controlled energy.
While being expressive, dramatic, and animated can work well in certain situations, it’s the calmer, more reserved energy that builds trust and makes people lean in.
Here’s why…
Calm energy signals a regulated nervous system, while intense energy signals stress and inner chaos.
Human beings are wired for co-regulation. This means our nervous systems are constantly reading the states of other people’s systems. And calm nervous systems draw us in, while reactive nervous systems repel us.
When someone is volatile, easily offended, or easily defensive… we feel it. And even if we can’t name it, we back away.
On the other hand, when someone is emotionally composed, especially under pressure, we feel relaxed around them. Our brain interprets them as trustworthy and competent.
So if you want to become more magnetic, strengthen your nervous system:
- Get enough sleep
- Schedule regular self-care
- Engage in calming activities like yoga and meditation
- Set and enforce boundaries to protect your peace
These simple things won’t just make you feel better in yourself; they will also change the way others feel around you.
4. Detach From The Outcome
Here’s one way many people unconsciously kill their own magnetism… they focus too much on the desired result.
Whenever you NEED a specific result, whether it’s the job, the approval, or the followers, your energy tightens. Your micro-expressions shift, your tone changes, and your body subtly leans forward.
And the result? People back away.
Research around scarcity mindset and persuasion shows that when people feel dependent on a specific outcome, they become less convincing and exude a more desperate energy.
However, people who detach from their desired outcome exude a sense of self-sufficiency, which makes them instantly more compelling.
They show up prepared, engaged, interested, but not desperate. And that makes all the difference. They give off the energy of “I would like this… but I do not require it.”
This is another principle where age is on your side, because ideally, as you mature, your identity becomes more stable and you’re less dependent on external validation.
5. Embrace Your Depth
There’s one energetic principle of magnetism that only comes with age: lived experience.
Typically, the older you are, the more you have lived. You’ve built something, failed at something, and most likely lost something you deeply care about.
These experiences give you depth, and depth is deeply attractive because it makes you harder to rattle, harder to impress, and harder to destabilize.
Depth is what gives your presence texture. It’s what makes your words carry experience. It’s what creates self-assurance and confidence.
We often feel like we should try to replicate that youthful sparkle we once had, but doing so dilutes our presence. What we should do instead is lean into our earned depth.
When you integrate everything you’ve lived through, especially the hard stuff, you take up space powerfully and authentically.
You Don’t Age Out Of Magnetism. You Age Into It.
You may have noticed that none of these shifts require you to be younger. In fact, most of them improve with age.
Because magnetism is about your energy, and the beautiful thing about energy is that it matures.
In this week’s YouTube video, I dive deeper into these 5 principles and share an additional tip for owning your space without overperforming.
