For several years, I worked as a family doctor in a university student health centre. Here I had hundreds of bright, ambitious young adults coming to me for the exact same reason…

Their inability to focus.

One after another, they would explain how they were convinced there was something wrong with them because they couldn’t stay focused during their lessons, struggled to sit down and study, and were falling behind on assignments.

But the majority had no real cognitive problems. They were simply living in a world that had turned their brains into browsers with 47 open tabs.

In 2026, this isn’t just something that affects students. Researchers from the University of California have found that the average time people can stay focused has dropped from 2.5 minutes to a shocking 40 seconds.

If you can’t get through a chapter of a book…

If you pick up your phone without even realizing it…

Or if you open your laptop to do one thing and end up spending twenty minutes doing something completely different…

Read on, as I’m walking you through how to fix your attention span by retraining your brain in a way that actually works in real life.

Why Our Attention Spans Have Got Worse

The decline in our ability to focus is due to the sheer amount of technology that now fills our environment. But there is one culprit in particular — our phones.

Our phones have trained our brains to expect constant stimulation. Every time we check our phone and find something interesting, such as a message, a comment, or a piece of news, our brain gains a reward in the form of dopamine

Over time, we associate interrupting our focus with a positive thing because, most of the time we do it, we get dopamine.

In this way, our phone is essentially a tiny slot machine.

Sometimes we pick it up and win by receiving a small dose of praise or drama. Other times, we lose by picking it up to find nothing interesting. Yet because the “wins” bring a little hit, our brain tells us to “check again” in the hopes of another hit.

So then, when we sit down and try to focus on something else, such as our work, studies, or simply reading a book, our brains struggle because the task at hand is not delivering the dopamine hits that we now crave.

How To Fix Your Attention Span in 3 Steps

  1. Fix Your Environment

Like the university students I treated, we tend to blame ourselves for our inability to focus. But it’s not that we’re lazy, lack discipline, or have broken brains. The problem is that our environment is designed to keep us distracted.

So, to make focus easier and distraction harder, we need to change the layout of our environment. This looks like:

  • Putting your phone in another room.
  • Turning off non-essential notifications.
  • Closing your inbox unless email is the actual task.
  • Keeping only the tabs open that you actually need.

Think about it: if your phone is right next to you while you’re working on your laptop, without even realizing it, your hand will reach for your phone, pick it up, unlock it, and open an app. Often we don’t even realize what is happening until we are 10 minutes into a social media scroll.

That’s why it’s essential to interrupt this automatic pattern. And one of the simplest ways to do this is to create a focus start ritual.

For example, you might:

Make a cup of tea → Put your phone in another room → Put on headphones → Open the document → Close everything else → Set a timer → And then you begin.

The brain loves cues. The more you repeat the same sequence, the more your brain starts to understand: this is where we focus.

In this way, you are basically training it with repetition.

  1. Train Your Brain To Tolerate The First 10 Minutes

For many people, the first ten minutes of focused work feel the hardest.

The brain is still agitated and craving novelty. So you get restless and feel an almost physical pull to check your phone.

At this point, you might think, “See? I can’t focus.”

But that is not necessarily true. You are simply experiencing the transition into focus.

The first ten minutes of focus can feel like trying to put a toddler into a car seat. Your brain is twisting, negotiating, and fighting you.

So here’s how to get through those 10 minutes of mental turmoil:

Choose one task, and set a timer for ten minutes. And here’s the important part: during those ten minutes, you ARE allowed to do the task badly.

It’s ok if you feel restless and bored. But regardless of how you feel, during those 10 minutes, continue to sit with the chosen task.

Do not give in to the urge to switch tasks. Instead, practice mindfulness

Notice whenever your mind wanders, and then gently bring your attention back to the task at hand.

Notice when you’ve unconsciously opened another tab. Then close it and return to the original tab.

  1. Rebuild Your Identity As Someone Who Can Stay

This final step is the part that I never hear people talk about. Yet it’s the hack that is most likely to create lasting change.

Most people beat themselves up over their struggle to stay focused. They tell themselves things like:

  • “I can never finish anything.”
  • “My brain is broken.”
  • “I have no discipline.”

The more you repeat these self-deprecating statements, the more you reinforce the identity of being someone who cannot change.

The statements become a cage, where each distracted moment becomes further proof that your inability to focus is just who you are.

But what if it is NOT who you are?

The final step is to replace this self-limiting identity with a more empowering one.

The statement “I can never stay focused” stems from a fixed mindset that believes change is not possible.

But the belief “I am someone who returns to the task at hand” comes from a growth mindset, in which you accept that you can change.

So this is the identity I want you to practice. Each time you notice negative self-talk, tell yourself, “I am someone who returns to the task at hand.”

And each time you notice you have gotten distracted or your mind has wandered, guide your attention back to the original task.

Each time you do this is a rep. And as the reps build, you start to become a person who CAN stay with what matters.
